LGBTQIA+ affirming
Queer-affirmative therapy online in India
You shouldn't have to educate your therapist or defend who you are before you can talk about what's actually on your mind.
A lot of queer people in India have had the experience of sitting across from a counsellor and feeling the air change the moment they mention a partner's name or their pronouns. Some have been told it's a phase. Some have spent the whole hour explaining terms instead of being helped. Queer-affirmative therapy starts from a different place. Your identity is part of who you are, and the session is for whatever you came to talk about.
I'm Cherry, a counselling psychologist and one of the co-founders of Nivaara Nest. Both Shambhavi and I offer queer-affirmative therapy online, to people across India, in English, Hindi or both. Shambhavi works closely with gender identity and sexual orientation, and with the shame and guilt that often come with growing up queer. I work with identity exploration and with queer couples.
What a queer affirmative therapist in India offers
Being affirming is more than being polite. In practice, it means a few concrete things:
- We use the name and pronouns you give us, and we ask rather than assume.
- We treat being gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, non-binary, asexual, intersex or questioning as valid, with no attempt to change or "correct" it.
- We don't assume your identity is the reason you came. Sometimes it's work, grief or sleep.
- We understand that stigma, family pressure and a lack of safe spaces can wear on mental health over years.
- We're also conscious of how caste, religion, class and region shape queer lives in India differently.
We're also neurodivergent- and disability-affirming and trauma-informed, because many people carry more than one identity that the world makes harder.
Things people bring to an LGBTQIA+ friendly counsellor
There's no list of right reasons. Still, some themes come up often.
Family and coming out
For many people, family is where love and pain sit closest together. You might be deciding whether to come out, figuring out how much to share, or dealing with a reaction that hurt. You might be out to siblings and cousins while parents talk about rishtas at every family function. Therapy is a place to think it through at your own pace. There's no timeline, and nobody here expects you to come out to anyone.
Identity and self-understanding
Questioning can bring relief and fear at the same time. You're welcome to explore without having a label ready, or to use a word today and a different one later.
Gender and dysphoria
For trans and gender-diverse people, dysphoria, social transition, workplace worries and family reactions can all weigh heavily. We offer a trans-affirming space to talk about these things. We don't provide psychological assessments, diagnosis or psychiatric care, so we can't issue assessments for medical transition, but we can support you emotionally and help you think about finding appropriate professionals.
Relationships
Queer relationships have all the usual joys and difficulties, plus a few extra ones: being hidden, living with partners' families, or not having models of what a relationship could look like.
Everything else
Anxiety, low mood, grief, trauma, OCD, depression, loneliness in a new city, burnout. You can bring any of it. You don't need to make your queerness the headline.

Affirming couples therapy for queer couples
I work with couples, including queer couples. Couples come for many reasons: arguments that go in circles, one partner being more out than the other, different ideas about the future, family pressure landing on the relationship, or wanting to understand each other better before a big step. Sessions are online, so partners can join from the same room or from different cities.
My approach draws on somatic, REBT, CBT, IFS and client-centred methods. In couples work that often means slowing the conversation down, noticing what happens in each person's body during conflict, and gently questioning rigid rules each person brings. I believe in understanding the person behind the problem, and in couples work there are two of them.
Staying safe and private at home
Privacy can be a real concern if you live with family who don't know, or share a flat. Sessions can be done in whatever way feels safest:
| Format | Could help when |
|---|---|
| Video | You have a private room and want face-to-face contact |
| Video, camera off | You'd like to hear us but not be seen |
| Audio only | You're on a walk, on a terrace or in a parked car |
| Text chat | Anyone might overhear, or typing feels easier |
What you share stays confidential, apart from the usual safety limits we explain at the start. If you're under 18, we can work with you with a parent or guardian's consent. We know that can be complicated for queer teens, and it's worth talking through on the intro call.
Starting LGBTQ therapy online with us
Sessions are 50 minutes. You choose ₹800, ₹1,000 or ₹1,200 per session, with no forms or proof, and the care is the same at every price. Our affordable online therapy page explains the sliding scale. I'm available on weekdays from 5 to 10 pm and weekends from 12 to 6 pm; Shambhavi on weekdays from 7 to 10 pm and weekends from 12 to 6 pm (IST).
You can begin with a free 15-minute intro call to see if it feels right. If it doesn't, or if later on you'd rather see the other therapist, you can switch any time. If you're anxious about the first hour, our guide to your first therapy session covers what usually happens. And if you'd find it easier to talk about family in the language you grew up with, my piece on therapy in your own language might resonate.
We're not an emergency service. If you're in crisis, please call Tele-MANAS on 14416 or 1-800-891-4416 (free, 24×7), KIRAN on 1800-599-0019, or 112.
Questions people ask
What is a queer-affirmative therapist?
A queer-affirmative therapist treats LGBTQIA+ identities as natural and valid, never as a problem to be fixed. They respect the words you use for yourself and understand how stigma and family pressure can affect mental health.
Do I have to talk about my sexuality or gender in therapy?
No. You can come to therapy for anything, whether that's work stress, grief or sleep. Your identity only becomes a topic if and when you want it to be.
Do you offer couples therapy for queer couples?
Yes. Cherry works with couples, including queer couples, online across India.
Will my family find out I'm in therapy?
What you share in session stays confidential, apart from the usual safety limits your therapist will explain. You can also choose text chat or audio with the camera off if privacy at home is difficult.
Can you help me with coming out?
We can help you think through whether, when and how to come out, at your own pace. There's no expectation that you come out to anyone.
Do you provide letters or assessments for gender-affirming care?
We don't offer psychological assessments, diagnosis or psychiatric care. We can help you think about finding appropriate professionals if that's part of your path.
